This is an excellent book and a major contribution to medical knowledge and health education.
The author utilises his wealth of gynaecological experience to produce a book which is both scientifically sound, yet accessible to lay persons. The use of a question and answer format makes the book easy to read, even though it touches on and explains several complex gynaecological conditions and problems such as preeclampsia.
Writing from the perspective of the human body, it is as if the human body itself is speaking through the book.
The author tackles taboo subjects such as female genital mutilation sensitively yet authoritatively. Likewise, controversies are dealt with in both an evidence based as well as compassionate manner. These include whether caesarean sections are preferable to vaginal births and whether vaginal births are still safe after multiple caesarean sections.
The author emphasises the important distinction between association and causation, such as when considering the question as to whether hair straightening products can cause fibroids, both of which are common in females of African descent. This book spans lesser gynaecological issues on the one hand, but also deals with serious life threatening conditions with equal illumination.
The author does not hold back on confronting bad practices, such as FMF or the link between smoking and subfertility, whilst at the same time, encouraging life saving practices and skills. The book discourages inappropriate stigma through providing enlightenment.
This book is captivating and difficult to put down, once you start to read it!
In my view, the book is a must have for anyone that is curious about the human body from a gynaecological perspective and I highly recommend it.
